by Bertrand Russell
This is one case where the fact that the book is a second edition and not a first can really make a difference. The first edition of Our Knowledge of the External World was published in 1914, the second edition in 1929, and in the meantime, the world of physics was revolutionized. That matters when the subject of your work is how we perceive reality, as this book’s is. Russell says as much in his Preface to the Second Edition: “In this edition I have made such changes…as are required by the progress of theoretical physics since 1914, more particularly by the general theory of relativity.” Our Knowledge of the External World began life as a series of lectures in Boston in 1914, where he spelled out his theory of “neutral monism,” which holds that there is no strict division between the mental idea of a thing and a physical object. The Stanford Encyclopedia of Philosophy says Our Knowledge of the Physical World is one of Russell’s “most influential writings relating to his theories of metaphysics and epistemology.”
Published in 1929 by W.W. Norton and Company, New York
Edition: Second Edition
Binding: Hardcover
Condition: Very good
Comments: Our 1929 copy is in very good condition, with some scuffs on the front cover and some shelf wear on the bottom edges, and a chip on the back cover end paper, but the pages are tight. The text is remarkably clean, with no foxing, marks or tears, and no previous owner’s name.
