Les Misérables

$50.00
by Victor Hugo
We suspect this sweet four-volume edition, published in Paris (and, of course, en français), was privately bound—despite our best efforts, we haven’t been able to find another copy exactly like it. All the volumes are half-bound with red morocco leather and black-and-white marbled covers. There are three raised cords on the spines; the second section created by the cords is framed by gold tooled lines and says in gold tooled lettering, “V. Hugo — Les Misérables.” The fourth section has similar framing and the volume number. The end pages are made of a beautiful glossy multicolor combed marbled paper. Interestingly, though each volume contains the standard bibliographic information of title, author, publisher, and place, and explains which parts of Hugo’s masterwork have been put into each volume, there is no publication date included. However, we were able to locate another copy for sale where the listing featured a photograph of the title page of the first volume that is identical to ours where the seller listed his copy with a 1924 publication date. Each of our volumes also has a delightful almost-full-page art deco black-and-white bookplate of a past owner with the date “1924” printed on it. If that is not the actual date these volumes were published, it does give a good estimate of their age. Considering that, they are in very good condition, which is how we are listing them.
Published by Ernest Flammarion, Éditeur, Paris
Binding: Hardcover
Condition: Very good
Comments: Green and red labels in the books indicate they were originally sold by G.E. Stechert & Co. (Alfred Hafner), the famous international booksellers and importers in New York. There is some rubbing and shelf wear to the marbling on the covers and edges. There is also some shelf wear to the leather, particularly at the bottom of the spine and at the corners. There is a 1/4-inch scrape of the endpaper of Volume 4. The top edges are somewhat soiled but not stained (see photo). But all of the pages are intact and, except for the owner’s name lightly penciled in at the top of the fly leaf of each volume, unmarked. 12mo.
